Scope of Nursing in India

Work in the nursing department includes, but is not limited to, taking care of people which includes their physical as well as psychological maladies, managing particular groups of patients from the pediatric ward, psychiatric ward, ICU, taking care of the medication of the patients, maintaining patient records, administration, routine work, setting up of medical equipment, etc. To become a nurse, years of study, skills, and practice are required. Eligibility

Candidates may take up nursing from bachelors, master, PhD to even diploma courses. The eligibility criteria of each course varies from the other. The details of the same are below. • Bachelors course – Candidate must have completed their class 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The duration of this course is generally three to four years
• Masters course – Candidates must have completed their Bachelor’s in Nursing. The duration of this course is generally two years
• Ph.D. course – Candidates must have completed their postgraduate degree in Nursing
• Diploma course – Candidates must have completed their class 10th or equivalent. The duration for this course is either one year or two years depending on the course.

Scope of Nursing in India

Back in the days, nurses did not have a lot of options to choose from. The service was limited to hospital and bedside nursing. Today, the career options in nursing are so wide and for all the right reasons. As per the Indian Nursing Council, the list of opportunities available in nursing is as below.

• Staff Nurse – Direct patient care is provided to one patient or a group of patients. Staff nurses are directly responsible to the ward supervisor
• Ward Nurse or Nursing Supervisor – These nurses are responsible to the nursing superintendent. They look after the management of a ward or a unit
• Departmental Supervisor or Assistant Nursing Superintendent – These nurses look after more than one department or a unit like the surgical department or outpatient department. They are directly answerable to the deputy nursing superintendent
• Deputy Nursing Superintendent – They assist in the nursing administration process in a hospital. These nurses are directly answerable to the nursing superintendent
• Nursing Superintendent – These nurses are responsible for the safe and efficient management of hospital nursing services. They directly report to the medical superintendent
• Director of Nursing – These nurses are responsible for nursing services as well as education in a teaching hospital
• Community Health Nurse – CHN or Community Health Nurse provides services that focus mainly on the reproductive child health program, health awareness, and hygiene
• Teaching in Nursing – There are many positions available under nursing education like the clinical instructor, tutor, senior tutor. Lecturer, Associate Professor & Professor in Nursing, etc. Their scope of work involves planning, teaching, and supervising the learning experiences of the students
• Industrial Nurse – These nurses render services like first aid, care during illness, health education about industrial hazards, and prevention of accidents
• Military Nurse – These nurses become a part of the military services in the Indian Army. This means they become commissioned officers who are given a rank from lieutenant to major general
• Nursing Service Abroad – Nurses who are looking for an attractive salary and better professional opportunities, can seek a job overseas
• Nursing Service Administrative Positions – These nurses are placed at the state level of the Deputy Director of Nursing/ Joint Director of Nursing at the state health directorate. The highest administrative position on a national level is the Nursing Advisor to the Govt. Of India
• Nursing Education Administrative Position – These nurses are placed at the state level of the registrar
